About Zhang Yuan

Zhangyuan is located in the core area of Nanjing West Road Scenic Reserve in Jing'an District, Shanghai, bounded by Shimen 1st Road to the east, Weihai Road to the south, Maoming North Road to the west, and Wujiang Road to the north, with a total area of approximately 46,800 square meters. The garden was first built in 1882 by Zhang Shuhe, a wealthy businessman from Wuxi who purchased land and named it "Zhang's Wei Shu Garden". After it was opened to the public in 1885, it became the largest public activity center in Shanghai in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, and was known as the "No. 1 Garden on the Sea." The existing building complex is one of the largest, most well-preserved, and richest in architectural forms in Shanghai.
