About Hemmings ＆ Berkley Co （Hankou Jingming Foreign Firm）Building Former Site
The Building of Hemmings & Berkeley Co is a six-story reinforced concrete building designed and built by the British-owned Jingmings & Co. in 1920 in the British Concession of Hankou (now No. 53, Qingdao Road Intersection, Poyang Street, Jiang'an District). It was completed in 1921. Influenced by the New Architecture Movement, the building has a simple and modern appearance and a compact internal layout. The ground floor is office space, the 2-3 floors are apartments, and the 4-5 floors are owner-occupied areas. When completed, it was the tallest reinforced concrete building in Hankou. It is currently used as the office building of the Wuhan Democratic Party (now called the Democracy Building). On October 7, 2019, it was incorporated into the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units, Hankou Modern Building Group.
