About Wen Tianxiang Temple
Wen Tianxiang Temple, also known as Prime Minister Wen Temple, is located at No. 63 Fuxue Hutong, Dongcheng District, Beijing. It was built in the ninth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1376) and opened to the public in 1984. It was an ancestral hall during the Ming and Qing dynasties to worship Wen Tianxiang, the national hero of the Southern Song Dynasty who resisted the Yuan Dynasty. Its former site was the earthen prison where Wen Tianxiang was imprisoned in Dadu (today's Beijing). In the ninth year of Hongwu's reign in the Ming Dynasty, Liu Song, the deputy envoy of the Chasi Department in Peiping, requested that a temple be built here to commemorate it. From the second year of Xuande's reign (1427), it was included in the national sacrificial ceremony. Every year in mid-spring and mid-autumn, officials from Shuntian Prefecture would offer sacrifices with the ceremony of Shaolao.
