About Dongzhai Port Nature Reserve
The mangrove reserve is located in Dongzhai Port, Meilan District, Haikou City, Hainan Province. It is a national-level nature reserve and was designated as a national AAAA-level tourist attraction in April 2025. Established in 1980, the reserve was upgraded to a national-level nature reserve in 1986 and was included in the International Important Wetlands List in 1992. With a coastline stretching 84 kilometers and an area of over 26,000 mu, the reserve is home to 36 species across 20 families of mangrove plants, accounting for 97.2% of all mangrove species nationwide, including rare and endangered tree species such as water coconut and red mangrove. Centered around the tropical and subtropical intertidal mangrove ecosystem, the reserve forms a complete ecological chain that includes birds and exhibits viviparous reproduction.
