About Mǎtí Sì

Matie Temple is located in Matie Tibetan Township, Sunan Yugur Autonomous County, Gansu Province. It is a national AAAA-level scenic area, 65 kilometers from Zhangye City, and serves as a comprehensive tourist destination that combines cave art, the stunning scenery of the Qilian Mountains, and Tibetan cultural traditions. The scenic area comprises seven major cave complexes: the Thousand Buddha Caves, Matie South Monastery, Matie North Monastery, the Upper, Middle, and Lower Guanyin Caves, and Jinta Monastery, with more than 70 existing cave niches. Founded during the Northern Liang Dynasty, it derives its name from the ancient horse’s hoof prints discovered within the Matie Hall of Puguang Temple. Together with the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang and the Yulin Caves in Guazhou, it is regarded as one of the three great artistic treasures of Buddhist art in the Hexi Corridor.
