About Jincheng Pass
“Jincheng Pass” is a long-form novel by Li Xiqi that explores modern urban themes. It took twenty years of conceptualization and writing, with six revisions and additions, and was published in 2010, earning the Yellow River Literary Award of Gansu Province. Taking Lanzhou’s Jincheng Pass as its geographical setting, the novel focuses on the living conditions of intellectuals during the period of social transformation following the launch of reform and opening up. Through the diverse life paths of family members amidst the nationwide wave of business entrepreneurship, it presents a vivid portrayal of everyday life in the city during the 1980s and 1990s. The novel centers on Huang Yiming, a renowned Qinqiang comedian, and unfolds its narrative around the conflicts arising within his family due to differences in social status and economic level.
