About Ancient Town of Guandu

Ancient Town of Guandu is located in Guandu District, Kunming City, Yunnan Province, 8 kilometers southeast of the main city. It is located on the north bank of Dianchi Lake. It borders Yiliu Township to the southeast, Dianchi Lake to the south, Liujia Township to the west, and Xiaobanqiao Town to the north. It covers an area of about 17 square kilometers. Guandu Ancient Town has a long history and is one of the birthplaces of Dian culture. During the Dali Kingdom of Nanzhao, it was already a large market town and transportation hub on the northeastern shore of Dian Lake. Because it is close to Dianchi Lake, the ancestors made a living by preying on snails. Over time, snail shells piled up like mountains, which was called "Snail Cave" in ancient times. Many of the existing ancient buildings were built on this Neolithic shell mound cultural site.
