About Zytglogge

The clock tower is the most representative medieval building in the old town of Bern, Switzerland. It was built in the early 13th century and was originally the west gate. The existing masonry structure retains the original wall features of the 13th century. The building was rebuilt as a clock tower after a fire in the 15th century. In 1530, an astronomical clock mechanism was added, which has the functions of time display, seasonal indication and moon phase observation. The clock tower is famous for its mechanical puppet timekeeping performance four minutes before the hour, including rotating bears, golden roosters, flapping clowns and other special parts. As an important part of the world cultural heritage of Bern's Old Town, it attracts a large number of tourists every year.
