About Lady Pearl's Well
Zhenfei Well is a national scenic spot located inside the Zhenshun Gate of Ningshou Palace in the Palace Museum in Beijing. It was originally an ordinary well. In the 26th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1900), the Eight-Power Allied Forces invaded Beijing. Before Empress Dowager Cixi fled westward, she summoned Concubine Zhen, who was imprisoned in the north courtyard of Jingqi Pavilion, to the Summer Palace. She ordered eunuch Cui Yugui to push Concubine Zhen into the well to her death, hence the name "Concubine Zhen". There are small holes on both sides of the existing wellhead stone that are locked with iron bars, which are well preserved. Concubine Zhen was hated by Cixi for supporting Emperor Guangxu's reforms, and was placed under house arrest in the 24th year of Guangxu's reign (1898).
