About united states congress

The Congress of the United States of America is the highest legislative body in the United States. It is composed of the Senate and the House of Representatives and is held every two years. The first Congress convened in 1789. The predecessor of the U.S. Congress was the Continental Congress. The Constitutional Convention was held in Philadelphia in 1787 and established a government model in which the legislative, judicial and executive powers were separated and checked and balanced. After the Constitution came into effect in 1789, the U.S. Congress was also formed on this basis. In 1864, the Senate ratified the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, abolishing slavery in the United States. After 1910, the U.S. Congress entered the era of "rule by committee." In the 1960s, the civil rights movement rose in the United States and pushed Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act.
