About Suzhou Street

Suzhou Street is located in the back lake of the Summer Palace in Haidian District, Beijing, covering an area of 9,000 square meters. It has a warm temperate semi-humid continental monsoon climate. It is open from 8:00-17:30 from April 1st to October 31st, and from 8:30-16:30 from November 1st to March 31st. This street was built as a palace store imitating Suzhou's Shantang Street for the Empress Dowager's birthday during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. It was originally called Wanshoushan Trading Street. The shopkeepers were dressed up by eunuchs and palace maids, and it was specially used to simulate market transactions when the emperor and empress visited. It is the only copy of the "palace market" in ancient China. It was burned down by the British and French forces in 1860. The reconstruction project was launched in 1986 and opened to the outside world in 1990.
