About Lanzhou Waterwheel

The Lanzhou waterwheel is a large-scale Yellow River irrigation tool that originated in the Ming Dynasty. It was improved and created by Lanzhou Jinshi Duanxue in the 35th year of Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty (1556) by learning from the southern barrel wheel. The waterwheel is also known as the "Crown Car", "Overturned Car", "Water Car" and "Tiger Car". In 2006, Lanzhou's waterwheel manufacturing skills were included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage lists. Duan Xu developed rapidly after setting up the first waterwheel on the north bank of the Yellow River outside Guangwumen. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, Lanzhou had 157 waterwheels, which increased to 252 in 1952, with a total irrigation area of 100,000 acres. The waterwheels are distributed from Guide in Qinghai to Zhongwei in Ningxia.
