About Carved Moon and Open Clouds
The Moon Kaiyun is one of the 40 cultural relics of the Old Summer Palace. It is located in the southeast corner of Houhu Lake in the Jiuzhou Scenic Area. It is a royal garden architectural landscape of the Qing Dynasty. It was first built in the Yongzheng period and was originally named the Peony Pavilion. In the 61st year of Kangxi, three generations of emperors including Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong came here to appreciate peonies. In the ninth year of Qianlong's reign, it was renamed Ji'en Hall, and later its current name. In 2009, the Shandong Provincial People's Government donated nine century-old peonies covering nine major color families. The tallest of these peonies is about 1.5 meters tall, with several layers of overlapping petals. The main building, Ji'en Hall, has nanmu as pillars and is covered with gold and green glazed tiles.
