About Anyou Palace

Anyou Palace, also known as Hongci Yonghu, is one of the forty sceneries of the Old Summer Palace in the Qing Dynasty. It is a royal ancestral temple located in the northwest corner of the garden. The building complex was built in the fifth year of Qianlong's reign (1740). The main building is a grand hall with double eaves on the top of the mountain and nine couplets in width. It is covered with yellow glazed tiles and is the tallest building in the garden. After the Anyou Palace was built, it was mainly used to worship the emperors of the Qing Dynasty starting from the Kangxi Emperor. When it was burned down in 1860, the palace had displayed portraits of the five emperors and empresses of Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong, Jiaqing and Daoguang. The palace was destroyed by fire from the British and French forces in 1860.
