About Pengdao Yaotai
Penglai Island is one of the 40 scenic spots in the Old Summer Palace. It was first built in 1725 (the third year of Yongzheng reign). It was originally named Penglaizhou, and its current name was adopted during the Qianlong reign. The landscape is located in the center of Fuhai and consists of three islands symbolizing Penglai, Fangzhang and Yingzhou. The architectural layout is designed based on the "Fairy Mountain Pavilion" painting by the Tang Dynasty painter Li Sixun, including the palace gate, main hall, Changjin Tower, Shenzhou Three Islands and other architectural complexes. In the Qing Dynasty, this was an important place for the royal family to watch dragon boats during the Dragon Boat Festival and release river lanterns during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Pengdao Yaotai survived the looting by the British and French forces in 1860, but was accidentally burned down in 1870.
