About Garden of virtue and harmony
Dehe Garden is located on the northwest side of Renshou Hall in the East Gate of the Summer Palace in Beijing. It was originally the site of Yichun Hall during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. In the 17th year of Guangxu (1891), it was rebuilt into a theater viewing venue for Empress Dowager Cixi. It consists of 24 buildings including the Grand Theater Building, Yi Le Hall, and Qingshan Hall. The main body of the Grand Theater is a three-story wooden structure, 21 meters high and 17 meters wide. It has 7 patios, underground wells and water wells. With the help of mechanical devices, it can realize the lifting and lowering of actors and special water effects. It is also known as the three major stages of the Qing Dynasty along with the Changyin Pavilion in the Forbidden City and the Qingyin Pavilion in Chengde. The theater building cost 710,000 taels of silver to build.
