About bird cage
The bird cage is a landscape in the Western Tower Scenic Area in the north of Changchun Garden of Yuanmingyuan. The bird cage is located on the east side of the Huanghua Array. It is actually a Western gate built in 1759 (the 24th year of Qianlong's reign). The east and west sides of the building have completely different styles. The west side is a Chinese-style archway and the east side is a Western-style gate, which embodies the characteristics of combining Chinese and Western styles. The bright room is a through-hall door, and peacocks and other birds are caged in the north and south sides of the house, hence the name bird cage. During archaeological excavations in 2015, a yellow-glazed glass component engraved with the words "Peacock Archway" was unearthed, confirming the legend that peacocks were raised here.
