About Ruins of Hanlin Academy

The ruins of the Hanlin Academy are located in the present-day Ministry of Public Security courtyard on the south side of East Chang'an Street in Beijing. It was formerly the Honglu Temple built in the 7th year of Zhengtong (1442) in the Ming Dynasty. During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, the original site was rebuilt and designated as the Zhengsanpin Yamen. During the Yongzheng period, it became a national talent reserve institution. Emperors of the Qing Dynasty often entertained officials here and wrote poems to commemorate their prosperity. The building complex originally included major buildings such as Dengyingmen and Changli Temple, as well as Ming Dynasty monuments such as Liujing and Keting. It was once the world's largest ancient book library, housing a copy of "Yongle Dadian" and the original version of "Sikuquanshu".
