About Mao'er Hutong

Maoer Hutong is located in Jiaodaokou Street, Dongcheng District, Beijing, starting from Nanluogu Lane in the east, Di'anmenwai Street in the west, connected to Doujiao Hutong in the north, and Dongbuyaqiao Hutong in the south. It is one of the 25 Hutong protected areas in Beijing. The hutong is 585 meters long and 7 meters wide. It has the texture of the Yuan Dynasty and retains its original style. In the Ming Dynasty, it was called Zitong Temple Wenchanggong Hutong, named after Wenchang Palace; during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, it was renamed Maoer Hutong, and the name is still used today. During the Cultural Revolution, it was renamed to the Four Brilliance Streets, and then restored to its original name. The pronunciation of "er" in the name of the hutong reflects the pronunciation habits of Beijing dialect. There are many historical buildings existing in the hutong.
