About Scholar Archway
Jinshi archway is a stone archway erected by local officials or villagers during the Ming and Qing dynasties to honor imperial examination scholars. It usually uses a four-column multi-bay imitation wood structure and is decorated with auspicious reliefs. It is distributed in Fujian, Guangdong, Anhui and other places. In the Ming Dynasty, there were also Jinshi Squares in Xinghua City Confucian Street, Zoucheng Ancient Confucian Street and Chenzhou City. Its construction is usually approved by the official, and there is always a plaque of "Enrong", which has the function of both indicating the merits and decorating the streets. Most of the existing examples were built in the Ming Dynasty, such as Huang'ao Jinshi Square in the 24th year of Jiajing (1545) in Shishi City, Fujian Province, and Huanghang Jinshi Square in Putian City in the 3rd year of Jiajing (1524).
