About Thousand Buddhas

Thousand Buddhas refers to the group of statues of Buddhas in the three generations and ten directions, and is the abbreviation of the Three Thousand Buddhas in the Three Ages of Mahayana Buddhism (the past solemn kalpa, the present virtuous kalpa, and the future starry kalpa). The core of the belief is to accumulate merit by copying and reciting Buddha's names. These Buddha's names come from different classics such as "Buddha Speaks of Determining Bini Sutra", "Sutra of Thousand Buddhas of Past Solemn Kalpas", "Sutra of Thousands of Buddhas of Future Constellation Kalpa"; the images are mostly stylized sitting Buddhas, with regular color arrangement to create a "connection of light" visual effect. Production methods include drawing, molding, carving, etc. It was first seen in Cave 169 of Bingling Temple in the first year of Jianhong of the Western Qin Dynasty (420).
