About Tiaoyuanzhai

Tiaoyuanzhai, commonly known as "Kanhui Tower", was built in the 17th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1891). It is located on the north bank of the east end of the back lake of Wanshou Mountain in the Summer Palace in Beijing. It is a special place for Empress Dowager Cixi to watch the Miaofengshan Temple Fair. The building faces south and faces north, with a width of five bays. It adopts gable-style roofs and Su-style colorful paintings, with a construction area of 239.4 square meters. The front yard wall is embedded with "Ten Thousand Words Endless" brick carvings and peony reliefs, which are representative works of brick carvings in the late Summer Palace. The main building is connected to the "Jiamu Tree Garden" on the west side through a climbing corridor, and a stone pier is set up in the south for Cixi's boat use.
