About golden triangle

The Golden Triangle is located at the junction of the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos in Southeast Asia, covering Myanmar's Shan State and Kachin State, Thailand's Chiang Rai Province, the north of Chiang Mai Province, and Laos' Luang Namtha Province, Phongsaly, Oudomxay Province and the west of Luang Prabang Province. It has a total area of 194,000 square kilometers and more than 3,000 small and large villages and towns in the area. The Mekong River runs through this area, forming a complex landform with overlapping mountains and traffic congestion. The subtropical climate and fertile soil are suitable for poppy cultivation. After France colonized Laos at the end of the 19th century, it implemented an opium economic policy. Since the 1950s, the region has gradually become a major drug producing area in the world, with opium production reaching 2,400 tons in 1989.
