About Ruyuan
Ruyuan is located in the southeast corner of the Changchun Garden of the Old Summer Palace. It is a garden-in-a-garden built in the 32nd year of Qianlong's reign (1767), imitating the Zhanyuan Garden in Nanjing. As the largest garden among the five gardens in the Changchun Garden, it covers an area of 19,000 square meters. It was extensively renovated during the Jiaqing period and includes Yanqing Hall, Hanbi Tower and other buildings. Systematic archaeological excavations in the 2010s basically revealed its layout during the Jiaqing period, and thousands of cultural relics including the Jiaqing imperial inscription "Phi Qingdeng" were unearthed. In 2017, archaeologists discovered ancient lotus seeds in the Jingxiang Pond at the ruins and successfully bloomed in 2018 after being cultivated.
