About Jian Yuan

Jianyuan is located at No. 5 Xiaoxiangfeng Hutong, Shichahai Scenic Area, Xicheng District, Beijing. It was originally a residence built by Prince Gong Yixin in the late Qing Dynasty in the first year of Xianfeng (1851), also known as "Zhiyuan". In the first year of Xianfeng (1851), after Prince Gong Yixin was granted the former Heshen Mansion, due to Qing palace discipline prohibiting singing girls from entering the mansion, he chose a site outside the mansion on the south bank of Shichahai to build Jianyuan Garden. According to the research in "Research on the Names of the Gardens of Prince Gong's Mansion in the Qing Dynasty", Yixin clearly called this garden "Jianyuan" in his collection of poems. The garden faces south, covering an area of about 3,500 square meters, with an existing building area of 580 square meters.
