About Phoenix Gate

Phoenix Gate originally refers to the palace gate decorated with phoenix-shaped patterns in ancient times. It was first seen in the literature records of Yu Xin of the Northern Zhou Dynasty, "Feasting with the Law of Fenghe" and "The Story of Sanfu". The current Chongqing Phoenix Gate is a closed gate in the ancient city defense system of the Ming Dynasty with "nine open, eight closed and seventeen gates" shaped like nine palaces and eight trigrams. It was built in the fourth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1371) during the construction of the city by Dai Ding, the commander of the Chongqing Guards. Because the city gate is close to the Fenghuang Terrace ruins, there is a folk legend about the Dragon King of the East China Sea and the Phoenix resolving the danger of the boatmen.
