About Shewei Compound
Savatthi (Sanskrit: Śrāvastī), the ancient Indian capital where Buddha Sakyamuni preached the Dharma for the longest time, is located on the south bank of the Laputi River in northern Uttar Pradesh, India, at the junction of Gonda County and Baraichi County. The city was the capital of the Kosala Kingdom in ancient India. It is famous for the Gion Vihara built by the elder Sudatta and Prince Jeta. It is one of the famous holy places in the history of Buddhism. When Xuanzang visited in the 7th century, Jialanduo in the city was in ruins. In 1893, the British archaeologist Ka Jiahan conducted excavations here, and the unearthed Buddhist cultural relics were collected in the Lucknow Museum. In 2019, the archaeological team discovered a city wall foundation about 80 meters long in the northwest of the site, which was constructed with rammed earth and bricks.
