About Imperial Ancestral Temple

Imperial Ancestral Temple is located on the east side of Tiananmen in Dongcheng District, Beijing. It was built in the 18th year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty (1420). It was a place where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties worshiped their ancestors. It was one of the "Five Altars and Eight Temples" in the old Beijing city. On May 1, 1950, it was renamed the "Beijing Working People's Cultural Palace" and officially opened to the public. The Taimiao Temple is rectangular in plan, covering an area of 197,000 square meters, 475 meters long from north to south, and 294 meters wide from east to west. It has triple walls. The main buildings within the wall are all facing south. The main buildings in the temple are the Xiangdian (front hall), the sleeping hall (middle hall), and the Ancestral Temple (back hall).
