About Soviet aircraft carrier Kiev

The Kiev aircraft carrier (Russian: Киев, English: Kiev Aircraft carrier) is an aircraft carrier under the Soviet Navy. It is the first ship of the Soviet Type 1143 aircraft carrier. It is also the second-generation aircraft carrier developed by the Soviet Union and the first-class aircraft carrier equipped with fixed-wing carrier-based aircraft. The ship was named after Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. Construction started at the Nikolayev Shipyard on July 21, 1970. It was launched on December 26/27, 1972, and entered service in February 1977. The Kiev aircraft carrier is the world's first aircraft carrier equipped with vertical/short takeoff and landing fighter jets. It is equipped with anti-ship missiles, anti-aircraft missiles, anti-submarine missiles and other weapon systems.
