About Sera Monastery
Sera Monastery (Tibetan: སེ་ར་དགོན་པ་; English: Sera Monastery, the full name of Sera Mahayana Monastery, also known as Sera Mahayana Continent, is located at No. 1 Sera Road, Chengguan District, Lhasa City, Tibet Autonomous Region. It is a famous monastery of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Together with Ganden Monastery and Drepung Monastery, it is known as the three major monasteries in Lhasa and is listed as one of the six major monasteries of the Gelug Sect. The temple was built by Tsongkhapa's disciple and the "Great Compassionate Dharma King" Sakyamuni in the 17th year of the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty (1419). Sakyamuni went to Beijing twice to receive courtesy from Emperor Chengzu and Xuanzong of the Ming Dynasty, and was given Buddhist scriptures, statues, and ritual implements.
