About Wooden Pagoda Temple
The Muta Temple was built in the third year of Renshou in the Sui Dynasty (603). It was originally named Zending Temple, and later evolved into names such as Dazhuangyan Temple and Shengshou Temple. After restoration during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, it was renamed the Muta Temple and is now the Muta Temple Heritage Park. The temple was built by Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty for Empress Dugu Xian. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties, it stood side by side with the adjacent Dazongchi Temple, forming a double temple layout. Each temple built a seven-story wooden pagoda, making it the tallest building in Chang'an City. Among them, Da Zongchi Temple was built by Emperor Yang of Sui Dynasty for Emperor Wen, and was originally named Da Chan Ding Temple. When Wuzong of the Tang Dynasty exterminated Buddhism, it was preserved due to its special status.
