About Guande Hall
Guande Hall is located on the north side of the east gate of Jingshan Park in Beijing, close to the west wall of Huguo Zhongyi Temple. It is an ancient building built in May of the 28th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty. Its name comes from "Shoot to observe virtue" in "Book of Rites: Shooting Meanings". During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was a place for emperors to watch their courtiers' archery. There was a plaque in the hall that read "Shoot to observe virtue" written by Emperor Kangxi. In the thirteenth year of Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Qianlong moved and expanded the Guande Hall into a royal funeral palace in order to house the coffin of Empress Xiaoxian. Since then, it has become the resting place for many emperors and empresses of the Qing Dynasty. The building complex is a four-entry courtyard with a total area of 6075.96 square meters.
