About West Gate
The archway door is an archway-style facade with a roof on the door, also known as a gate tower. It is mostly used in important buildings such as ancestral halls, temples or houses. Its shape evolved from the early courtyard door form and has both practical and decorative functions. Archway doors are divided into two categories according to material: brick and wood. Brick-carved archway doors are common in the Jiangnan area. They use polished brick carving techniques to present auspicious patterns or historical stories, and the door head imitates the shape of a wooden structure. In the northern region, wooden archways are dominated by sky-high arches, with columns reaching into the sky and majestic shapes. The archway gate originated from the ancient scale gate structure with upright columns and crossbars.
