About Wupailou
The Wupai Tower is an ancient building at the north end of Qianmen Street in Beijing. It was built in the fourth year of Zhengtong in the Ming Dynasty (1439). It is named Zhengyang Archway because it is located south of Zhengyang Bridge. It was originally a wooden archway with six columns, five rooms and five floors. The columns soared to the sky, the forehead beams were decorated with hollow flower panels, and a plaque read "Zhengyang Bridge" in both Manchu and Chinese characters. As an important part of the Zhengyangmen architectural complex, it is located in the southern section of the central axis of Beijing. It is the only royal road node for emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties to offer sacrifices. Together with the Zhengyang Bridge, Zhengyangmen Gate Tower and Arrow Tower, it forms an interrelated building complex.
