About Xibei Academy

Xibei Academy, located in Puqian Town, Wenchang City, Hainan Province, was founded in the 19th year of Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1893). It was initiated by Pan Cun, a calligrapher in the late Qing Dynasty, and supported by Zhu Cai, the military commander of Lei Qiong, and Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Guangdong and Guangxi. The academy covers an area of more than 20 acres and faces south. It is composed of a gate, a lecture hall, a main building, a sutra hall and a living room. It has a brick structure, is connected by east and west corridors, and is surrounded by walls. The mountain gate is a rolling shed covered with glazed tiles, and the plaque "Xibei Academy" was inscribed by Yang Shoujing, a calligrapher in the late Qing Dynasty. On both sides of the gate is engraved a couplet written by Pan Cun "To maintain customs and educate talents.
