About Ancient Gate
A cross-street building is a type of building that is partially elevated above the ground. It is usually built across a street or alley. The lower part has a pass hole for carriages and horses to pass through, and the upper part is equipped with a pavilion or hall, which has both traffic circulation and architectural space functions. Its prototype can be traced back to the portrait brick and pottery building models of the Han Dynasty, and developed into a mature form in the Qing Dynasty. It is often located at the turning point or starting node of the street to improve space utilization. The Guanyin Yuan crossing building in Beijing once connected the upper and lower courtyards of the temple and was responsible for almsgiving. The Liuli Canal crossing building is decorated with glass components and enshrines statues of gods, reflecting the integration of religion and folk customs.
