About Wuhan University Archway
The archway of Wuhan University is a landmark building of Wuhan University. It was built in 1931. It was originally a wooden four-column and three-interval mountain structure. It was destroyed by a tornado the following year. In 1934, the original site was rebuilt into a reinforced concrete cupola-style archway, using four eight-sided columns, with cloud patterns carved on the capitals, and the words "Grammar, Law, Science, Industry, Agriculture, and Medicine" written in small seal script on the back. In 2001, the archway was listed as the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units as an early architectural component of Wuhan University. The archway has been rebuilt four times: in 1993, the Bayi Road School Gate Archway was built based on the Republic of China Archway in order to celebrate the school's centennial anniversary.
