About French Embassy Former Site
The former site of the French Embassy is located at No. 15 Dongjiaomin Lane, Dongcheng District, Beijing. It was originally a pure public residence and was rebuilt into the French Embassy in the 11th year of Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty (1861). The former site of the French Embassy now has a central fountain, a gate and four auxiliary buildings. The gates are made of bricks with pilasters and arches. The four annex buildings are arranged symmetrically, in the style of a French country villa, with two floors of wooden structure, with wooden verandahs and brick continuous corridors. The former site of the French Embassy was renovated on the basis of the Chinese-style architecture of the pure palace. It maintained the Chinese shape and volume to a large extent, providing a physical reference for studying the combined architecture of the embassy and the palace in the late Qing Dynasty.
