About Tianjin Drum Tower

Tianjin Drum Tower is a landmark building in Nankai District, Tianjin. It was built in the second year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty (1404). It is one of the three treasures of Tianjin. Its central location is considered the birthplace of Tianjin city. This building was originally the core of the Tucheng defense system. When the brick city was rebuilt in the sixth to seventh years of Hongzhi (1493-1494), it was officially built with a square brick platform base and arched doorways on all sides to connect to the main road. It was actually a bell tower. The iron bell in the building weighs 1,500 kilograms and has a diameter of 1.4 meters. The body of the bell is cast with a relief of two mating chisels. The button of the bell has a unique shape and is known as the "King of Bells".
