Waking up in Guilin feels like waking up inside a dream

By Emma · Guilin

Waking up in Guilin feels like waking up inside a dream you aren't quite ready to leave. Today, I took the cruise down the Li River to Yangshuo, and I finally understand why poets have been obsessed with this place for centuries. The karst mountains rise out of the mist like silent, green giants guarding the water. There’s a stillness here that you don't find in Shanghai or Beijing. We passed local fishermen on bamboo rafts with their cormorants, and for a second, time just stopped. It’s not just the scenery; it’s the rhythm of life. People here seem to move with the river. I spent the afternoon getting lost in the Longji Rice Terraces, watching the sun dip below the Dragon’s Backbone. The sheer scale of human labor carved into those mountains is humbling. Guilin isn’t just a destination; it’s a reminder that nature is the greatest artist, and we’re just lucky enough to be viewers.
