The Lychee Bay (Xiguan) Neighborhood: Old Guangzhou in a Single Walk Xiguan is the historic heart of Guangzhou. Before the skyscrapers, before the malls, there were these qilou buildings — arcaded walkways, wrought‑iron balconies, and wooden shutters. The best preserved part is Lychee Bay (Lizhi Wan). A canal runs through the neighborhood, lined with restored qilou from the 1920s. In the 19th century, this was where wealthy merchants built their grand homes. Today, it's a peaceful walking area with small museums, teahouses, and shops selling traditional Cantonese sweets. The Liang's Clan Ancestral Hall is free to enter and holds a small folk art collection. The Old Lychee Wan Museum (a former mansion) explains the neighborhood's history. Go in the late afternoon. The light on the canal is beautiful around 4pm. After dark, red lanterns reflect on the water — very photogenic. No entrance fee for the streets. A few small museums charge 5‑10 RMB. Combine with a walk to nearby Yongqing Fang, a restored lane of qilou buildings with craft shops and cafes. Metro: Chen Clan Academy Station (Line 1), then a 10‑minute walk.
