The Big Wild Goose Pagoda: Symbol of Xi’an This

By Meet Xi‘an · Xi'an

The Big Wild Goose Pagoda: Symbol of Xi’an This 64‑meter brick pagoda has stood for over 1,300 years. It was built to house Buddhist scriptures brought back from India by the monk Xuanzang. The square in front of the pagoda is where locals gather every evening. The largest musical fountain in Asia shoots water in time to classical Chinese music. Shows are at 7pm and 9pm (check seasonal times). Inside the pagoda, climb the stairs for a view of the entire city. The steps are narrow and worn smooth by centuries of pilgrims. Entry to the pagoda grounds is 40 RMB. Climbing the pagoda costs another 25 RMB. The fountain show is free. Combine with a walk through the nearby Tang Paradise garden (120 RMB) or just sit on the square steps and people‑watch.
