Pingjiang Road vs Shantang Street – Which Old Street to Pick? Both are old canals lined with traditional buildings. But the vibe is different. Pingjiang Road is the most well-preserved ancient street in Suzhou. It runs about 1 kilometer alongside a narrow canal. Over 8,000 people still live here. The street is packed with small shops, cafes, and historic residences. Every corner is photogenic. Boat rides run along the canal. Shantang Street is longer (about 1.1 kilometers) and wider, stretching from the city center to Tiger Hill. It has more local food stalls and teahouses. The night scene here is spectacular – red lanterns everywhere, reflecting in the water. It‘s less artsy than Pingjiang but feels more authentic. Go to Pingjiang Road for daytime strolling and shopping. Go to Shantang Street in the evening for dinner and night photos. If you only have one afternoon, pick Pingjiang. It’s closer to the main gardens and easier to combine with museum visits. Walk all the way north from Shantang Street and you‘ll end up at Tiger Hill.
