About Kumtag Desert Scenic Area
The Kumtag Desert Scenic Area is located at the southern end of Shanshan County in Turpan City, Xinjiang. With a total area of 2,500 square kilometers, it is a national key scenic area and a national AAAA-level tourist attraction. Along with Tianshan Tianchi and Botasen Lake, it is one of Xinjiang’s three national key scenic areas. The area is renowned for its unique landscape, which offers a seamless connection to the city; the desert and the Shanshan Oasis create a striking visual spectacle characterized by a clear distinction between yellow and green. The desert was formed by sand deposited from the seven-angle well winds of the Tianshan Mountains and the Dabancheng windbreaks. “Kumtag” means “sand mountain” in Uyghur.
