About Astaan Ancient Tombs
The Astana Ancient Tomb Complex is located approximately 40 kilometers southeast of Turpan in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, near Astana and Hala Hezhu, and borders the ancient city of Gaochang to the south. Covering an area of about 10 square kilometers, it served as a public cemetery for officials and commoners of the Gaochang city during the 3rd–8th centuries. The Astana Ancient Tomb Complex was discovered in the 24th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1898), and more than 500 tombs remain today. It can be divided into three periods: the Jin Dynasty through the Sixteen Kingdoms period (Gaochang County), the Qiu clan’s Gaochang, and the Western Zhou of the Tang Dynasty.
