About Dunhuang White Horse Tower Scenic Area

The Dunhuang Baima Pagoda was first built in 386 AD to commemorate the white horse that died during the journey of the Northern Liang monk Kūmō Luòshí to spread Buddhism eastward. The existing pagoda structure was rebuilt in the 24th year of the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1844), standing 12 meters tall and comprising a total of nine stories, blending the style of Ming Dynasty Lama pagodas with local architectural techniques. The pagoda’s base is octagonal in shape, and its body features distinctive structural elements such as folded-corner overlapping designs and a bowl-shaped roof; copper bells hanging from the eaves ring in the wind.
