About Weizhou Shengtang Church

The Catholic Church on Weizhou Island is located in Shengtang Village on Weizhou Island, Beihai City, Guangxi Province. It is a Catholic church built in the French Gothic architectural style. The church was constructed by missionaries from the Paris Foreign Missions Society and was completed in 1880. The main body of the church is built using locally unique materials such as coral stone and volcanic rock, with a height of 21 meters and a total floor area of 774 square meters. Its construction was closely tied to the historical context of the Qing government’s “reopening of Weizhou Island” during the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty. The church was one of the largest churches in the Leilian region at the end of the Qing Dynasty, and it now serves as a nationally designated key cultural relic protection unit as well as a national 4A-level tourist attraction.
