About The hair-inhumed pagoda

The Hair Pagoda, also known as the Sixth Patriarch's Hair Pagoda, is located in front of the Sixth Patriarch Hall of Guangxiao Temple in Guangzhou. It is a national key cultural relic protection unit. It is said that the pagoda was first built in the first year of Yifeng of the Tang Dynasty (676), or it may be said that it was rebuilt in the Southern Song Dynasty. It was built to commemorate Huineng, the sixth ancestor of Zen Buddhism, who buried his hair after his tonsure and ordination. It was built by Facai, the abbot of Faxing Temple in the Tang Dynasty, who raised funds for its construction. The body of the tower is an octagonal brick-gray sand structure imitating a pavilion. It is about 7.8 meters high and divided into seven floors, with eight Buddhist niches on each floor.
