About Cliff carvings

Cliff carving is an art form of stone carving in ancient China that carves text or images on cliff walls. In a broad sense, it covers all carvings on natural stone walls, including text carvings, statues and rock paintings; in a narrow sense, it specifically refers to text carvings, which use natural stone walls to directly carve text to record events. This form is divided into two categories: text and image. Ye Changchi, a scholar of the Qing Dynasty, said in "Yu Shi" that "building a cliff is like a stele". The cliff stone inscriptions include seal script, official script, regular script, running script, and cursive script. For example, "Jingshiyu Diamond Sutra" in Tai'an uses Yuanli script, and "Ode to Zhongxing in the Tang Dynasty" in Yongzhou is written in Tang regular script.
