About Bai Civilian House
Bai architecture is a traditional residential form of the Bai people in Dali, Yunnan Province. It originated from the farming and settlement civilization. Building a house is a lifelong event for the Bai people. Its basic shape is traditionally inherited from the folk houses of the Central Plains, and it also has a unique style due to the natural environment. It is mainly a mixed structure of earth and wood or stone and wood. Typical shapes include courtyard patterns such as "three squares and one screen wall" and "four in five patios". The buildings are mostly facing west and face east. Screen walls are used to enhance lighting and are decorated with painted text. The gatehouse combines bracket wood carvings with plaque inscriptions. The walls are widely made of local stone, and the wooden parts are well-proportioned with the brick and tile structures.
